Ryoji Kaji: The Kanji we use for 'she' [kanojo, also meaning girlfriend] means 'a woman far away'. To us, women will always be on a distant shore. There's a river dividing men and women, deeper and wider than the ocean.
Shinji Ikari: I don't understand grown-ups. This is one of the few het pairings I love and support, (my fave eva pairing is still Shinji x Kaworu) considering, even, that it is a generally dysfunctional one. It's just wonderful that they, apart or together, provide both comic relief and a serious illustration of a complex human relationship, all tangled up with work, psychologies, the past... and how it ended for them must be one of the most touching aspects of the series for me.  ...and yes, shinji, not only is there sexual difference to mess up possibilities of understanding one another...human adults just generally tend to be extremely confusing.
